Understanding Mise-en-scene

 


Mise-en-scene, or “putting on stage in French”, is everything that the audience can see in a scene. Tools such as makeup, hair, set design, lighting, and costume as well as intentional choices such as color scheme, composition, and framing all work together to relay the story that the director (or the Auteur) is trying to tell.
